    What is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency IDentification chips. Most new credit cards, debit cards, passports as well as high-end phones have this technology built in.

RFID chips are a convenient way to store and read data and a replacement for the well-known magnetic stripe. There is no need to put your card through a strip reader and give your PIN or a signature: simply wave your card in front of an RFID scanner without even taking it out of your wallet!

How do I know if my card is RFID enabled?

The vast majority of cards issued since 2012 have RFID technology. All contactless cards should display the contactless wave symbol.

What is there to worry about?

Someone could build a counterfeit reader and pick up your RFID information against your will. These RFID reader devices can download, or even delete, your data by reading the RFID chip from a distance. Just walking by is enough. This form of digital theft is called RFID skimming.

It is unknown exactly how common this practice is, but is thought to be on the rise as contactless becomes more common, and the devices used to do it become cheaper.
